The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has finally released images of the area known as the Hubble Deep Field. The first thing I noticed, and most people are probably wondering, is, "Why are some of the galaxies in this image warped into a circular pattern?". The answer to this question is actually mind-boggling. Because the distance to the Hubble Deep Field is so vast, the light that reaches the Solar System is actually warped around other large objects. So in the image, there is a massive galaxy cluster in the center blocking our view of the Hubble Deep Field. You might think that this means the light cannot reach Earth at all since it is blocked. However, Einstein discovered that that is actually not true. The light will still reach Earth, it will instead bend around the galaxy cluster due to its massive gravity. So, the bent, warped galaxies in the image are actually not where we see them. They are behind a massive galaxy cluster with gravity so significant that it distorts the light from the Hubble Deep Field.
